WHEREAS, more than 1.9 million North Carolina residents are age 60 and older; and

WHEREAS, Older North Carolinians play an important role in our families and communities through their experiences, knowledge, talents and wisdom; and

WHEREAS, older Americans are actively involved in volunteering, mentorship, arts and culture, civic engagement and the workplace; and

WHEREAS, recognizing the important roles of older Americans encourages their ongoing participation and further accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, communities can provide opportunities to allow older citizens to continue to flourish through programs that allow older adults opportunities to stay engaged and utilize their leadership skills; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina is proud to recognize older Americans and to thank them for their contributions to our way of life, and supports the national theme for Older Americans Month – Unleashing the Power of Age;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, PAT McCRORY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 2013 as “OLDER AMERICANS MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
